Roz Nolan calls herself a ‘freshie’ to VMCH, having started as Residential Services Manager at St Bernadette’s Aged Care Residence seven months ago. Previously, she was roving across different residences – during which time she came to realise that she wanted her own home, her own ‘baby’ to take care of. Her interest in VMCH and St Bernadette’s was peaked when she heard about the residences’ new specialist dementia care program, Lady Lourdes House.

“I am all about innovation and exciting things – and working in aged care, I know how much these types of specialist programs are needed. I wanted to have my own home where I can really make an impact and follow through on the things that I have implemented. You can’t do that unless it’s your own little team.”

Roz says that she “loves everything aged care”. She didn’t have grandparents, so she invests her love in her residents, by getting to know them and making them feel special. She made sure to visit St Bernadette’s on Mother’s Day, and she will be there again on Father’s Day to bring a rose to each of the residents.

While things are more difficult now due to COVID-19, Roz says she understands families’ frustrations and sadness at not being able to see their loved ones.

“I have two children who live in a supported accommodation, so when our home here went into lock down, and families couldn’t see their loved ones, I understood how they were feeling because I couldn’t see my kids. They were also in lock down. I do understand, and I think that’s very important that residents, their family, and staff see me as a human, and not just a manager.”

Roz calls herself the ‘busybody’ of the home, because she takes an interest in everyone’s life, and who they are. She

“It’s important to share, I am a big believer that if I take care of every facet of their livers then they’ll do the same for my residents. I love my team, and I try to take a positive approach to work, and life.

“I am proud of my workplace. I need to be proud of the organisation that I work for, and VMCH has a great reputation, I love that. I also love that they support females in executive roles, that makes me proud.”
