Did you know 75 per cent of Australians have thrown clothes away at some point in the past year?
If you haven’t heard of ‘fast fashion’ yet, you soon will. It’s a phrase reflecting the advent of more accessible and affordable fashion; meaning consumers are shopping more than ever before. It also depicts cheap, disposable clothing that has a high carbon footprint to produce and often ends up in landfill. And it’s fast becoming part of our social conscience.
Recent YouGov Omnibus research* has revealed our large appetite for fast fashion brands. It also identified millennials (those aged between 16 and 34) have the highest proportion of new clothing.
Mackenzie Donnelly is an exception to this statistic. The 16-year-old is an avid op shopper who finds delight in discovering bargains that set her apart from the teenage fashion pack.
“I like having stuff that not everybody else has, and it’s obviously cheaper too, which is good! I’ve recently bought a brand new denim jacket and even my formal dress from an op shop.”
Not-for-profit organisation Villa Maria Catholic Homes (VMCH) runs four op shops in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, raising funds for its aged care and disability services.
VMCH Op Shop Warehouse Manager Laura Donnelly said the number of op shop clothing donations, and shoppers, had increased over the years.
“People are buying more from (mainstream) shops as there are a lot of cheaper prices now. They are changing their wardrobes more often and giving us their clothes,” she said.
“I think more people are coming in now as they realise they can buy nice, fashionable clothes at a cheap price – we get brand new items with tags still on or as new. You can find a unique piece or a designer dress for a quarter of the price.”
Giving back to the community and caring for the environment were also benefits of op shopping, Laura said.
The Villa Opportunity Shops Summer Clearance Warehouse Sale will include great discounts on men’s, women’s and children’s summer apparel, linen, curtains, footwear, bags and more. Come and enjoy our fashion parade. Fantastic door prizes available.
When: Wednesday, March 21, 5.30-8pm
Where: 355 Stud Road, Wantirna South.
*Data was collected online by YouGov Omnibus between 20 and 30 October 2017 among 2,536 respondents in Australia. Results are representative of the adult population.
