Newborough resident Sylvia McGregor, 73, had no idea what a Home Care Package (HCP) was until her Occupational Therapist mentioned it in passing.

As her ongoing treatment was getting expensive, Sylvia’s OT asked if she was interested in an HCP, to help her with her increasing health costs.

That was at six years ago, and Sylvia could not be happier with the help she now receives.

Sylvia is on a Level 4 HCP and requires a walking frame for in the home and an electric wheelchair for her out and about adventures. Her husband, Peter, is also in receipt of a Level 2 HCP with VMCH.

Her package includes regular house cleaning, gardening, Planned Activity Group outings, meals, and a personal alarm.

“I can’t praise them enough,” she says of the team at the VMCH Regional Office, located in George Street, Moe.

“They try to help me so much, they really are fantastic. If I need something, I just ring Wayne (HCP Case Manager); he is marvellous. I just love the bloke.

“I ring him, and let him know what I need, and in a couple of days, I have an answer. Usually, if there’s enough money in my package and it is suitable what I need, then I can get it.

“My old scooter was old and dilapidated, and I think it only took 3 weeks to get a new one.”

Sylvia is so pleased with the services, that she now refers to anyone she meets.

“I tell heaps of people to go to VMCH! One lady I know was having so much trouble and couldn’t get what she needed. I told her to go to VMCH.

“I also met a man down the street, he asked about my wheelchair, and I said, “I got it through VMCH” and started telling him all about it.

“When elderly people ask, I tell them where to get it, and how to get it. With the office in Moe, it makes it very easy to pop in whenever I need to.”

Sylvia says she is in no hurry to change from VMCH as her HCP provider.

“There’s no way I would change. Instead, I tell other people to change, because they are better off going with someone they can rely on.

“They are marvellous, they really are.”
