Almost 40 of VMCH’s most dedicated supporters gathered for the 10th annual Fawkner Fellowship Luncheon at Athelstan Retirement Apartments, in Camberwell, on September 18.

VMCH’s Board Chairman, Julien O’Connell, said the luncheon was an an opportunity for members of VMCH’s Board and leadership team to thank supporters personally and inform them about new projects and developments at VMCH.

“VMCH’s longevity and growth would not be possible without generous supporters who share our Mission to build inclusive, compassionate and sustainable communities,” he said.

The lunch follows on from Include a Charity Week, from September 9. This awareness week aims to highlight the important contribution made by people who leave a bequest in their Will.

VMCH Grants and Bequest Officer, Sandra Rosano, said bequests had a significant impact on the success of many VMCH appeals and capital works programs.

“Including a charity in your Will means you are recognising what is important to you in your life time.  It is your legacy for future generations.” Sandra said.

“At these lunches, and in general, we seek to open a dialogue about gifts in Wills because we hope to know the people that have planned to give in this way, and to recognise and thank them during their lifetimes.”

Who was Louisa Fawkner?

The Fawkner Fellowship is named after Louisa Fawkner, an important figure in VMCH’s history.

In 1907, Louisa, a partially blind early colonist, led a group of volunteers to establish the Catholic Braille Writers Association, later called Villa Maria.

From those humble beginnings of transcribing Catholic literature into braille, VMCH is now a modern and diverse not-for-profit organisation that supports more than 8,000 people from all walks of life.
