26 March 2020
Earlier this month Manfred and Annaliese Ardlt celebrated their 60th anniversary at Shanagolden Aged Care Residence, Pakenham.
They met at a dance in Black Forest, Germany and dated for six months before coming to Australia for an “adventure”. A quick marriage was organised and off they went.
Their commitment was for two years in a country in which they knew no one, nor did the speak the language!
They arrived in Melbourne in 1960 by ship after four long weeks of sailing, on their birthdays (they share the same date) and settled into a bungalow in Clayton. They also built a holiday house in Dromana and lived there before moving to Pakenham.
Manfred found work as an upholsterer and Annaliese worked in the factory for VW. They also grew their family, with the birth of their son, Christian. They now also have a wonderful daughter-in-law Gina, and two grandchildren, Rachel and Dillon.
The adventure-loving couple visited Germany many times over the years, plus many trips overseas; Europe, UK, US, China and cruising through Alaska and the Rockies. They have also toured around Australia. Annaleise says “no smoking or drinking” is what has allowed them to explore the world over the years.
Manfred suffered polio as a child and spent much time in hospital. It has affected his legs and his ability to walk now. Due to health difficulties, Manfred moved into Shanagolden in August 2019. It was a very sad and emotional day for the couple, but Annaliese, who still lives in Pakenham, visits her husband daily.
They have enjoyed a wonderful life together and celebrated their wedding anniversary with family and friends at Shanagolden.
“We are forever grateful for the care and services that are provided for us,” says Annaleise.
Happy anniversary!
