Did you know Sri Lanka is one of the largest producers of tea in the world?

This fun fact was among many shared with around 20 seniors during White Road Activity and Respite Centre’s annual Cultural Day on May 16.

Guest speaker Felicia Devinka presented a history of Sri Lanka through photos, music and traditional dress before guests were treated to some traditional Sri Lankan food including chicken and beef pan rolls, sweet lemon biscuits and rose water-infused fruit drinks.

Lifestyle and Respite Coordinator Lynne Cahir said the event aimed to create awareness about cultural diversity and provide a unique opportunity for guests to socialise.

“It is always really interesting to be able to look at other cultural groups to help us gain an understanding of their beliefs, traditions and learn something of their history,” Lynne said.

“Sri Lankan culture is so rich.  It is such a beautiful country, with colourful clothing and great food only a small part of the charm.  It is amazing to think that such a small island – a little smaller than Tasmania – has a population of 20 million-plus.”

Lynne said the centre, which welcomes people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, aimed to host smaller cultural celebrations as part of its monthly program.
