What do you do when you’ve successfully run a marathon? Some would say cross it off the bucket list and enjoy a well-earned rest. Others, like Scott Butterworth, decide to up the ante!
Scott will tackle 50km of trail running in the 2017 Surf Coast Ultra Marathon on 9 September to help raise funds for Villa Maria Catholic Homes’ specialist school, St Paul’s College.
In 2015, Scott raised just over $10,000 for the school in the Melbourne Marathon. This time he’s not only upped the kilometre’s, but also the goal, with a $15,000 target in mind.
Supporting St Paul’s College was an easy choice for Scott. His son Lucas, aged 11, has been a student there since 2014.
“He loves going and gets so much out of his time there,” Scott said. “I think the school does a fabulous job in caring for and developing every child who attends.”
Scott has been training hard for the ultra marathon, clocking up hundreds of kilometres of running, along with weight training, bike riding and swimming.
As the event date approaches, he’s feeling “excited and daunted, but ready”.
“This will be the most challenging thing that I have ever done. But I am sustained by the thought that my challenge will be nothing compared to the challenges that St Pauls’ students deal with every day. It is an unfortunate truth in our society that people with a disability are often marginalised and not well supported. Providing my support to St Paul’s will hopefully make a small contribution to dealing with this.”
