Chinese Community Group for seniors

VMCH’s Multicultural Wellness Centre in Wantirna is a place for seniors over 65 in Melbourne’s Catholic Chinese community to gather and celebrate in their culture.

Social support groups like the Chinese Community Group are important in helping seniors with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds make friends and feel connected. CALD seniors are highly likely to experience loneliness and isolation.

The Chinese Community Group offers two programs, the Chinese Out & About Group which visit locations in the local area and the Chinese Social Support Group which runs fun activities at the Multicultural Wellness Centre.

Chinese Out & About Group

Every Tuesday and Wednesday, from 9am to 4pm, members gather at the Multicultural Wellness Centre before setting off on their explorations.

Whether it’s a stroll through lush botanical gardens, a visit to the museum, a spree at the local shopping centre or a relaxing day in the park, there’s always something exciting on the agenda.

Social support group cost

Our Chinese Group flourishes due to funding from the Australian Government through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP). To ensure everyone can partake in our activities and morning tea, we request a nominal fee of $5. This small contribution helps us maintain an inclusive and vibrant community for all to enjoy.

Meet Rita

Rita has called Melbourne home for almost 30 years. Through the Chinese Social Support Group, she and her husband have had the wonderful opportunity to meet new people and forge friendships by participating in activities such as walks and Tai Chi.

‘My husband and I are really happy to join this group,’ she says. ‘You will find something different. You will find you are happy during that time.’
