What is a Home Care Package?

A Home Care Package is a package of financial support for people to help them to remain living at home as they age.

If you want to stay in your own home as you get older, but need some help with things like cleaning and preparing meals, or with transport so you can go shopping or attend appointments, a Home Care Package may help you.

A Villa Maria Catholic Homes (VMCH) Home Care Package is a self-directed option, tailored to your individual needs to help you to remain living at home for as long as possible, while giving you choice and flexibility in the way your care and services are provided to you at home.

The Australian Government provides support to people who are experiencing some difficulty with day-to-day tasks. It requires that you have an assessment by a government-funded body, then an organisation - such as VMCH - assists you with managing your Home Care Package.

How do I access a Home Care Package?

Your eligibility for a Home Care Package is determined by the Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS) in your local area. This assessment is free and is conducted in your home by experienced professionals who will discuss what is important to you to help you to remain independent.

How do I know if I am eligible for a Home Care Package?

To be eligible for a Home Care Package, a person must be assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS).

The Australian Government requires that people who can afford to contribute to the cost of their care pay an income-tested care fee. You can only be asked to pay an income-tested care fee if you have a yearly income above the following approximate thresholds:

  • Individual person – $25,487.80
  • Member of a couple but now separated due to illness (individual income) – $25,091.80
  • Member of a couple living together (combined income) – $39,561.60.

There are annual and lifetime caps that apply to the income-tested care fee. Once these caps are reached, you cannot be asked to pay any more income-tested care fees.

What supports are available if I have cultural or language requirements?

All VMCH Home Care Package services can support people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds.  We also have culturally-specific services to support people who come from non-English speaking backgrounds.
