National Op Shop Week kicks off on September 30 and it is a great time to reflect on all the great work done by the team that run VMCH’s four opportunity shops and warehouse across Melbourne.
When people donate goods or shop at our op shops, they are helping us sustain and grow our services. Income from our op shops help us to invest in resources that would otherwise not be available to people that are disadvantaged and need a helping hand.
Our op shops, located in Wantirna, Ferntree Gully Balwyn and Heathmont, are also much more. They provide work experience and social connections for our volunteers who come from different walks of life.
And of course, they are a great place for people to pop in for a wide range of affordable items in good condition including clothes, shoes, bric-a-brac, homewares, books, toys.
Our op shops are inclusive
Did you know that VMCH Op Shops are more accessible than ever with our travelling Mobile Op Shop?
These “pop-up” op shops travel to VMCH’s aged care residences across Victoria and allow them to browse and buy a wide range of affordable items.
VMCH Senior Manager, Volunteer Services and Opportunity Shops, Bron Summers, said the residents loved them.
“The smiles on the residents’ faces have been priceless, especially when they realise that they can afford pretty much anything,” Bron said.
There are many ways that people can support our op shops across Melbourne. Here’s just a few:
- Donate items that are in good condition to our opportunity shops
- Our op shops always welcome new volunteers
- Tell your friends about our op shops and the opportunities to shop and volunteer with us
- Pop in, say hello to the friendly op shop staff and volunteers and do a bit of shopping.
You can learn more about shopping at one of our op shops or volunteering by visiting our website.
