When you're focused on caring for someone else, making time for yourself can feel impossible.
Between appointments, responsibilities and the day-to-day demands of caring, many carers put their own wellbeing last. That's why taking a few hours to connect, recharge and enjoy something just for yourself can make a meaningful difference.
VMCH's Carer Support program exists to help carers do just that. Alongside respite, support groups, education and practical assistance, the program offers a wide range of events that give carers the opportunity to take a break and focus on their own wellbeing.
Throughout the year, carers can choose from different events and activities like creative workshops, gourmet meals, musicals, comedy shows and wellbeing experiences.
While everyone has their favourite event, many carers say it's the people they meet that keep them coming back.
Bradley, who cares for his teenage daughter and son, says talking to people with similar experiences has been one of the biggest benefits.
"VMCH has supported me in my caring role by helping me get out and socialise with other like-minded people."
Lauren also appreciates the chance to share experiences. As a mum to two boys with autism and ADHD, she says the events have helped her build connections with people who understand the challenges that can come with caring.
"It can be really lonely and isolating as a carer. When you start talking to other carers, you realise you're not alone."
For Jana, who cares for her two neurodiverse sons, the biggest benefit is the chance to switch off. There's nothing to coordinate and nobody else's needs to manage.
"There's no mental load. I just show up and do something fun for myself."
The events create space for her to focus on herself for a few hours, and the benefits often extend well beyond the day itself.
"My children are doing better because I'm doing better," Jana says.
Whether it's still life painting, an exercise group or simply a conversation with someone who understands, the events offer carers an opportunity to put themselves first.
And for many, that's what keeps them coming back. Hear it below in their own words.
