“We are the naughty ones, and I am the ringleader!”
Carol (75) lives at Star of the Sea Aged Care Residence in Torquay, along with Roma (84) June (90) and Beryl (94).
The four women are all very different but have much in common, including how they came to live at Star of the Sea, and what prompted their decision to make the move to residential aged care.
All were living with their children before making the decision to move into residential aged care. Why? For numerous reasons, but the main one being not wanting to intrude in their children’s lives.
But they couldn’t be happier about it.
“My family are quite a distance away,” says Beryl. “But once I had made the decision to move into aged care, I knew it was the right decision.
“I visited a few places, but once I came here to visit June (who she has known for over 20 years when they were both living in Sunbury), I knew I had to move here. My family just want me to be happy, and I am definitely happy here.”
“We have a lot of fun,” agrees Carol.
The ladies certainly look comfortable. They say hello to each resident and staff, by name, as they walk past. They all laugh when Jake, their physio, comes past and they all call out to him.
“We give him grief,” they laugh but insist that he is the one that leads them astray.
“It’s just so nice and relaxed. You can joke around and have a laugh with everyone.,” says Carol.
“It’s like one big happy family. The staff are absolutely beautiful, they give us a kiss and a hug, it’s very special.”
Beryl laughs and exclaims how her grandchildren tell her to book them in because it’s like a hotel. They discuss all the services they receive, and how well looked after they are.
The group also agrees that right now, they are the happiest they have been.
