Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC)

Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC) aims to support older people to improve their health and wellbeing, and stay independent for longer.

If you are struggling to complete everyday tasks, or want to delay or avoid the need to enter long-term care, STRC may help you to stay independent.

With the assistance of a multidisciplinary team of health professionals, the Villa Maria Catholic Homes (VMCH) STRC program can support you with things like cooking and nutritional assistance or with transport so you can attend appointments.  STRC can also help you to manage new or changing health conditions so that you can continue to live as independently as possible.

VMCH understands each individual has different care needs; that’s why we offer you flexible support.  You may be able to receive STRC in your home, in the community, in an aged care home or in a mix of these locations.

You can access STRC for up to eight weeks (56 days) depending on your needs.  STRC can be provided twice in any twelve-month period.

STRC is currently available to those living in the Hume region.

What can VMCH Short-Term Restorative Care do for you?

The types of services provided through STRC depend on your needs.  Services may include but are not limited to:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Podiatry
  • GP or geriatrician advice and medical care
  • Nursing
  • Personal care and domestic assistance
  • Psychologist or counsellor support
  • Nutrition/cooking assistance
  • Therapy groups
  • Continence management
  • Transport

How do I access STRC?

To access STRC you are required to receive an aged care assessment with the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT).  If you are eligible, you will then need a VMCH flexible care agreement, including a care plan.  This must be organised before you start receiving care from VMCH.

How do I know if I am eligible for STRC?

To be eligible for STRC, you must be an older person and you:

  • are run down after a recent illness
  • are slowing down mentally, or physically, or both
  • needs help with everyday tasks
  • want to stay independent and out of long term ongoing care.
